The 2023 Ford Super Duty introduces a host of new features and enhanced capabilities to its heavy-duty pickup line. Unveiled in September of last year, this impressive vehicle boasts an array of upgrades, including a brand-new 6.8L V8 engine, exceptional payload and towing capacities, Pro Power Onboard, and cutting-edge technology such as Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. Among the notable changes for the 2023 Super Duty is its completely redesigned cab, featuring a state-of-the-art head-up display (HUD) that Ford recently provided more detailed information about.

When behind the wheel of the 2023 Ford Super Duty, drivers will undoubtedly experience a sensation akin to piloting a fighter jet, courtesy of the numerous driver-focused features and information displays. This comparison is apt, as Ford drew inspiration from fighter jet planes for its HUD design. The purpose of the HUD is to efficiently relay crucial information to drivers without excessively diverting their attention from the road. To achieve this, the HUD projects pertinent readouts onto the lower portion of the windshield, bringing essential data closer to the driver’s direct line of sight.

Mark Sich, Ford’s digital design manager, explained, “Our aim was to create an extraordinary digital experience for our most dedicated truck customers, and during our research, we found aircraft HUD concepts particularly intriguing due to their task-oriented hierarchal structures. However, since pilots are trained to interpret information in a very specific and technical manner, we needed to ensure that our implementation was more intuitive for the driver, enabling them to immediately grasp the context of the presented information.”

The view provided by the HUD can be customized to display pertinent information at a glance, tailored to the specific requirements of each trip. Three selectable modes are available: Normal Mode, Tow-Haul Mode, and Off-Road Mode. In Normal Mode, the display showcases details such as speed, speed limits, and navigation instructions. Tow-Haul Mode presents additional information like a tachometer, gear selection, and trailer brake output. Lastly, Off-Road Mode not only displays a tachometer but also reports drive line status, vehicle pitch, and roll. Furthermore, the display automatically adjusts according to the selected drive mode.

Beyond its impressive aesthetics, the HUD also contributes to enhanced safety during driving. By keeping the driver’s eyes focused on the road, the risk of accidents is significantly reduced since unexpected events can occur rapidly.

Overall, the 2023 Ford Super Duty’s advanced HUD delivers an exceptional digital experience to its devoted truck customers. Inspired by aircraft HUD concepts but refined for intuitive driver interaction, this feature provides vital information while minimizing distractions. Coupled with its customizable display modes and safety advantages, the HUD showcases Ford’s commitment to innovation and elevating the driving experience.
