It wasn’t that long ago that Ford F-150 customers who wanted an off-road-focused variant of the popular pickup had essentially one option, aside from the FX4 Off-Road Package – the F-150 Raptor. However, that model is a bit hardcore and pricey for some, as well as perhaps more capable than they might need. Thus, the Ford F-150 Tremor was revealed back in December 2020 as a new, less serious and more affordable off-road-focused, full-fledged trim level in the lineup, and it will soon be joined by the 2023 Ford F-150 Rattler, which was just unveiled back in March.
The 2023 Ford F-150 Rattler will slot in that model’s lineup beneath the F-150 Tremor as a budget-friendly yet off-road capable pickup, though FoMoCo hasn’t announced pricing just yet. Regardless, the Rattler is based on the entry-level XL trim with the FX4 Off-Road Package and some unique interior and exterior enhancements that include Rattler badging, rattlesnake-inspired graphics, painted 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and a dual exhaust system. Inside the cabin, the F-150 Rattler comes equipped with Onyx seats finished with burnished bronze accents and stitching, which matches the same style of trim present on the instrument panel.
Otherwise, the FX4 Off-Road Package adds an electronic locking rear axle with either 3.31 gears for 5.0L V8 Coyote or 3.5L V6 EcoBoost equipped models, 3.55 gears for 2.7L V6 EcoBoost equipped pickups, or 3.73 gears if equipped with the Heavy-Duty Payload Package. Additional equipment includes off-road tuned front shocks, monotone rear shocks, skid plates for the fuel tank, transfer case, and front differential, Hill Decent Control, and Rock Crawl Mode.
Meanwhile, the F-150 Tremor – which starts out at $53,085 – is a bit more hardcore thanks to its more serious equipment, including an upgraded suspension with retuned springs, revised front hub knuckles and upper control arms, Tremor-specific monotube shocks at the front and twin-tube rear shocks, a Raptor-style bash plate, unique matte-finish 18-inch wheels, 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, an optional Torsen limited-slip front differential, an optional torque-on-demand transfer case for high-series models, 1.5 inches more total travel in the rear, and an additional inch of total travel in the front. The F-150 Tremor is only available with Ford’s 3.5L V6 EcoBoost powerplant, however.
Visually, the F-150 Tremor stands out thanks to a unique grille featuring a blacked-out Ford Oval with Active Orange accents, two Active Orange front recovery hooks, Raptor-inspired off-road fixed running boards, a cutout rear bumper, high-flow dual exhaust, two rear recovery hooks, and Active Orange-highlighted badges on the fenders, bedsides, and tailgate. Inside the cabin, the F-150 Tremor features more Active Orange accents, unique seat trim with special stitching, materials, and finishes for the instrument panel, center console, and doors, and a six-position auxiliary power switch pack. Rock Crawl is standard, while Trail Control and Trail Turn Assist are optional.
