2022 Ford Expedition Is A Better Buy Than The Chevy Tahoe

My Project 39
The 2022 Ford Expedition has been named a better buy than the Nissan Armada by Consumer Reports, and now, the consumer organization has also now recognized the Expedition as a better buy than the Chevy Tahoe, too.

The Ford Expedition has racked up its fair share of accolades in recent months, including Kelley Blue Book’s Best Full-Size SUV honors, being named Consumer Reports‘ Most Satisfying Large SUV and Best Large Three-Row SUV, and landing on KBB’s Best Family Cars of 2022 list. Now, the refreshed 2022 Ford Expedition continues that trend after being named a better buy than the Nissan Armada by Consumer Reports, and now, the consumer organization has also now recognized the Expedition as a better buy than the Chevy Tahoe, too.

The 2022 Ford Expedition adds four colors to its roster: Forged Green Metallic, Stone Blue Metallic, Infinite Blue Metallic, and Dark Matter Metallic. Here’s our first look at the Dark Matter color option.

While the 2022 Ford Expedition currently lags behind the Tahoe in terms of sales, Consumer Reports deems the big SUV a superior value over its main rival for a number of reasons. The Tahoe was all-new for the 2021 model year, while the Expedition was refreshed in 2022, though both share quite a bit in common.

Regardless, CR found some criticisms with the Tahoe, including its not terribly great fuel economy, subpar braking performance, poor front and rear visibility, and push-button gear selector that’s a bit clunky to operate. Third row legroom isn’t as good as the Expedition, and taller passengers found a lack of headroom in the second row. Finally, a number of driver-assist features that are standard on the Expedition are optional on the Tahoe.

Meanwhile, CR praised the Expedition for its adequate power, smooth-shifting transmission, max towing capacity (when equipped with the heavy-duty towing package, and modern interior filled with high-quality materials. Interestingly, CR found the front seats in the Expedition to be more comfortable than the ones present in the Lincoln Navigator. On top of all that, the Expedition enjoys higher ratings among CR members when compared to the Tahoe, too.

Overall, Consumer Reports calls the 2022 Ford Expedition “a nicer vehicle overall,” with a powerful and refined powertrain, a nicer interior, and more standard safety features, coupled with solid reliability. In terms of overall scores, the Expedition wins handily, with a 73 versus the Tahoe’s 39, a total affected in a big way by the Tahoe’s predicted reliability score of 1 out of 5.
