The 2022 Ford Mustang will bookend production of the S550 generation of the Ford Motor Company’s iconic pony car before the all-new S650 2023 Ford Mustang brings about a host of changes to the long-running model. The 2022 Mustang will also introduce a few changes to the lineup, however. And now, sources familiar with the matter have said that 2022 Ford Mustang production will begin early next year.
2022 Ford Mustang production will begin at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant on January 3rd, 2022, though this date is subject to change, especially in light of ongoing supply issues including the semiconductor chip shortage. 2022 Mustang order banks are already open for all models, including the Shelby GT500.
The 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500, in particular, will feature a couple of key additions for the new model year, including the availability of a new exterior color called Code Orange, which was introduced on the 2021 F-150 Raptor and will also be available on the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor. The 2022 GT500 also gains a Heritage Edition that pays homage to the original 1967 GT500, and a special one-of-one example is up for grabs via a new sweepstakes. The GT500 will also drop the Carbon Fiber Handling Package for 2022.
In addition to the new GT500 Heritage Edition, the new Coastal Limited Edition option package will be available on the 2022 Mustang. The long-running California Special package will introduce a host of changes for the new model year, while a new Stealth Edition Appearance Package will make its debut on the Mustang as well. There are also a couple of deletions to note, as the 2022 Ford Mustang will drop the Carbon Sport Interior Package, while the EcoBoost Premium will no longer be available with the Pony Package.
Finally, the 2022 Mustang GT and its 5.0L Coyote V8 will lose 10 horsepower and 10 pound-feet of torque as a result of changing emissions requirements, bringing output down to 450 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.
